Before Shirma rose to fame in her home country the Netherlands, she gained experience by performing as a backing vocalist for the greatest: Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, Alain Clark, Candy Dulfer and Dutch representative Anouk at the Eurovision Song Contest. After being proclaimed as best supporting vocal by The Eurovision Times, it was time for Shirma to move to the front stage. Four years and three successful albums later she has become one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated Soul singers. In 2017, she pays it forward by celebrating Soul legend Aretha Franklin.
Born and raised on Sint Eustatius, Shirma carried along a great deal of Caribbean soul when she moved to the Netherlands at the age of 19. Although she always stayed true to her Gospel roots, she grew to fame performing Jazz, Funk and Soul. After her appearance in The Voice of Holland, she leaped to the next level of her career. She successfully released three albums, the third one being awarded the 2015 Edison Jazzism Audience Award. Her highly anticipated fourth studio album ‘Soul Serenade’ was recently released, including newly arranged classics like ‘Imagine’ and ‘Let It Be’, and a duet with US soul sensation Ryan Shaw.
This year will be a year of Soul; with Aretha Franklin’s 75th Birthday, and Shirma Rouse bringing it home to the Caribbean. Paying R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the Queen of Soul in her Celebration Tour, Shirma stops by Aruba to shake up the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. As quoted by the Dutch press, only few can deliver a tribute as convincing as Shirma does. You better Think, before missing this special performance!
